Sodapoppin discovers that his prized sub-button has been stolen by his brother, D-Kane.This map was made to be played live by Sodapoppin @ twitch.tv/sodapoppin. The entire process of the making the map was streamed live @ twitch.tv/dangerpaws and incorporates many ideas from the viewers.

This project was a collaborative effort with another Twitch Streamer known as ‘DangerPaws’. The main objective was to create a horror-themed gameplay map that would take the Streamer/Player, SodaPoppin, through a series of handcrafted puzzles, incorporating the memes that had become popular within the streamer’s community. The project had a tight timeline as it was intended to celebrate SodaPoppin’s achievement of becoming a Twitch Partner.

It is important to note that this project may no longer be available as the engine, versioning, and source materials are no longer accessible beyond prebuilt data. This was a one-off project that holds significance only for those who actively participate in SodaPoppin’s Twitch channel. While the game remains playable, some of the jokes may not be tasteful or may not make much sense to those outside the community.

The primary goals of the project were as follows:

  1. Design Levels, Maps, Themes, and Mechanics: The objective was to utilize in-game assets to create enjoyable experiences for everyone. The levels were designed to incorporate community memes and maintain a pacing that aligned with the format of a streaming session, allowing for moments of attention and distraction.
  2. Incorporate Community MEMEs: The project aimed to integrate popular memes from the community into the gameplay, adding a personalized touch that resonated with SodaPoppin’s audience.
  3. Puzzle Design and Platforming: The puzzles were designed to be relatively easy to solve but required basic platforming skills. It is important to note that the game was built on a non-designed engine, which posed some limitations during the development process.
  4. Streamer-Friendly Pacing: The pacing of the game was carefully structured to align with the streaming format, allowing for breaks and interruptions while maintaining engagement and entertainment value.
  5. Quick Pipeline for Testing: Given the limited resources and software available during the 2013 timeline, the development team aimed to create an efficient pipeline for level testing between the two developers involved in the project.

In terms of my contributions to the project, I took on the role of a game designer and level designer, collaborating with the programmer and game designer, DangerPaws. I utilized photo editing software to modify and customize assets, achieving the desired visual aesthetics on meshes. Additionally, I developed a tool to generate basic AngelScript functions, which were implemented into the game engine to facilitate recurring events. I also designed and layered scenes to establish pacing within the game.

Overall, my involvement in this project revolved around game design, level design, asset customization, and the development of tools to enhance efficiency and streamline the process. It was a collaborative effort to create a unique gaming experience tailored specifically for the Twitch streamer’s community.

Goals:

  • Design Levels – Maps – Themes – mechanics using in-game assets so everyone could enjoy
  • Incorporate – MEMEs from community
  • Pacing must follow a streamer format – ability to pay attention and leave focus while going
  • Puzzle design must be easy to solve but requires basic platforming (non designed engine)
  • Create quick pipeline for level testing among 2 developers
( 2013 timeline didn’t have software available at the time for hobby development.)

Technology Used:

  • Angel Script / C++
  • Blender (asset retexture/kit bashing)
  • Photoshop (texturing)
  • Amnesia game engine (This is running on old 2.0 engine)
